Abstract
In order to evaluate the relationship between parameters indicative of lead exposure & to find out the most reliable & feasible test method for the screening of lead workers, we observed 9 parameters of lead exposure of 118 lead workers in lead smelting industry.
The parameters chosen for this study were as follow: blood lead (PBB), urine lead (PBU), ¥ä-aminolevulinic acid in urine (ALAU), coproporphyrin in urine (CPU), zinc protoporphyrin in whole blood (ZPP), hemoglobin (HB), hematocrit (HCT), ¥ä-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity (ALAD) and activity ration (A/R: absorbance at substrate pH6.6/absorbance at substrate pH 5.8)
To evaluated the interrelationship between parameters we used simple regression & stepwise multiple regression analysis.
The results obtained were as follows;
1. The mean value of PBB was 43.3¡¾ 9.2§¶/§£ and the mean value of other parameters except ZPP, ALAD & A/R were in normal range.
2. The parameters which had significant correlation with PBB were ALAU, ZPP, HB, ALAD & A/R showing highest correlation coefficient value in the pairing of ZPP & PBB.
3. Among stepwise regression analysis which took ALAU, CPU, ALAD, A/R, HB & ZPP as dependent variable in each analysis with all other parameters as independent variables, only the analysis which took ZPP as dependent variable showed the primary role of PBB as independent variable to the dependant variable.
4. With above results measurement of ZPP could be recommended as one of good reliable test method to replace the very difficult measurement of PBB in industrial setting.
